Literature Update December 2015

The Academy provides this regular e-update to
raise awareness of current research in orthotics and prosthetics
published outside of the Journal of Prosthetics and Orthotics (JPO).

The list below is the result of a search for articles including the terms "orthotic devices" and "artificial limbs" indexed August – November 2015. Where available, links to freely accessible full text versions of the article are provided. Where only a link to the abstract is provided, the full article may be available for purchase. Results have not been edited for style but have been sorted for clinical relevance.

Overuse injuries are common in those who participate in regular physical activities, such as active military personnel, and severely limit the type and length of participation in activities. Although interventions may have a positive impact on a person's ability to participate in these activities and decrease risk of injury, there is little evidence to support interventions such as the use of foot orthoses. The researchers wanted to better understand the role foot orthotic use has in naval recruits going through 11 weeks of training. The study is being conducted as a parallel-group blinded, randomized controlled trial with two groups of participants: a control group, who received a standard pair of insoles; and an intervention group, who will receive premolded foot orthoses. The researchers are primarily interested in the incidence of four common injuries among the control and molded foot orthosis group: medial tibial stress syndrome, patellofemoral pain, Achilles tendinopathy, and plantar fasciitis. Secondary, the researchers are interested in the incidence of pain, frequency of pain, time of day pain occurs, and comfort. The main purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of foot orthotics in reducing overuse injuries. Now that the study parameters have been defined, the researchers have begun recruitment and results are forthcoming.
